New class! Celtic Knot Braids & Designs

From simple, two-stranded braids to complex spirals and fantastic animal forms, Celtic knots have long been admired for their intricacy and beauty. But did you know that even the most complicated of these forms are built up from simple principles?

In this class students will learn not only how to draw these forms, but also how to decorate them in a variety of ways. By working with Celtic knot and braid designs, students experience the dimensionality of form as they explore the concepts of “over” and “under.” Introduction of the “disappearing line” helps develop the ability to “follow a line of thought.” In addition, drawing these forms helps to advance focus and concentration as the drawing process itself organically brings students to an  attentive, alert state.

Celtic Knot Braids & Designs for Grades 5-8 is offered on Mondays at our Rancho Cordova location and is taught by Mr. Huff. Register soon to hold your child’s place in class!

New! Writing: Imagination & the Basics

In this writers’ workshop for Grades 4-8, students will experience playing with dialogue, using descriptive language, and learning word games and activities. With their new skills, students will combine sentences to create more complex and interesting writing. Designed for both enthusiastic writers and those who would rather do anything than write, this class will deepen students’ relationship to language, showing how sensory images make writing come to life. Students will have opportunities to share their work and ask questions about each other’s writing in a supportive environment, while enhancing the process of revision. Along the way, students will learn the answers to these questions:

  • What is a sentence?
  • Where do I punctuate?
  • How do I write a paragraph? (topic sentence, closing sentence, starting a new paragraph)

Homework will be assigned. Supplies students will need to bring to each class meeting: binder, pens, pencils and a folder. Optional: pencil sharpener, journal/notebook.

Instructor, Ms. Audra Sterrett, holds a BA in Literature and has been credentialed to teach in California public schools. In addition, Ms. Audra has been homeschooling her own children for nine years and teaching and assisting at WLR for two years. Ms. Audra brings joy and enthusiasm to her students, with a bright, positive outlook that is inspiring to all.

New class in Davis: Musical Theatre!

For the Fall term, Davis WLR is excited to announce Musical Theatre!

Students who enroll for this class will benefit from the combined talents of Mrs. Jennifer Tan, teaching the music and songs, and Dr. Rick Tan, directing the students in a musical production! Depending on age, experience, and desire, students will be assigned individual roles and/or choral parts. The medium of theatre, enhanced with music, is a fantastic way for children to learn dramatic and choral skills.

First day: students reviewing the script with Dr. Tan.

On the final day of the Fall term, the children will perform their musical for families and friends. Written by Dr. Tan, the story is always a creative re-telling of a historical figure and events. This Fall, the play centers around Elizabeth Jane Cochran, who pioneered investigative journalism, and went around the world in a record 72 days back in Novemeber 14, 1889. She was famously known as Nelie Bly. Songs will include pieces inspired by Stephen Foster’s ballads of traditional Americana. Parents may be recruited for assistance with their children’s costumes.

Class Spotlight: Math Games & Puzzles and Math Games & Logic

Solving problems logically is an important skill that goes far beyond math and other academics. It is a life skill that children will need as they grow toward and into adulthood when managing numerous challenges such as resolving conflicts with roommates; navigating the myriad of university major, general education, and graduation requirements; and other tasks like learning to change a tire, balance a checkbook or compare credit card offers.

Organizing information, guessing, estimating and predicting are all aspects of learning to think logically. One of the best ways for students to acquire problem-solving skills is through active involvement in a variety of problem-solving situations. Since children develop these skills through experience, it is helpful to expose them to a variety of problem-solving opportunities.

games-logic-2

In WLR’s Math Games & Puzzles and Math Games & Logic classes, students practice finding solutions through pictorial representations or by constructing three-dimensional models. They may examine visual representations of the problems or use manipulatives such as wooden or cardboard tangrams, colored circles, dice, game pieces or game boards. They deepen and expand their understanding through opportunities to explain their problem-solving strategies  to the teacher and their classmates.

The goal of these classes is twofold:

  1. To ensure that students increase positive feelings and decrease fearful attitudes about mathematics.
  2. To increase problem solving skills.

games-logic-6

Math Games & Puzzles is for students Grades 2-4 and emphasizes the joy and wonder of math, helping to lay the foundation for a lasting interest in mathematics. For grades 4-8 in Math Games & Logic, students will learn to approach problems systematically, sharpening their powers of logical deduction. They will learn to recognize patterns to solve problems and learn to try new ideas or generate new methods of tackling a problem. Both classes emphasize a cooperative learning environment and a non-threatening, supportive approach to encourage intellectual exploration and risk-taking.

Both classes begin January 23, 2017,   American River Grange in Rancho Cordova. Our teacher, Ms. Audra Sterrett, is warm, caring, cheerful and enthusiastic. As both an experienced public classroom teacher as well as a home educator of her own three children, she is sensitive to the needs and experiences of homeschooled students.

Physical Education: Games & Movement

Movement is an important part of education. But what is healthy movement? How do we meet the developmental needs of the growing child?

In Western culture where professional sports hold high status, children may think of movement primarily in terms of team sports. In the WLR Games classes, we aim to give the children basic coordination and movement skills that will help them when they decide to play organized sports. Children engage in a variety of traditional games including circle games, running and tag games, line games and others. These activities help develop skills useful for other sports such as basketball. Students learn to work together as part of a group in both highly active as well as quieter games.

In addition to simply having fun in our popular Games classes, students also work on their social interactions, learning to play with their peers: learning to acknowledge one another, play safely and to gain an appreciation for each other as well as their physical skills and the many types of movement.

Games has always been one of our most popular classes and is now offered at two of our convenient locations for Grades 1-8:

  • Tuesdays in Davis, from 1:10 – 2:00 p.m., led by Dr. Tan
  • Thursdays in Sacramento, from 1:20 – 2:10 p.m., led by Mr. Huff
