Sharing WLR

Although our classes are intentionally small to ensure the highest quality, we do need minimum enrollments (typically about 5 students) in each class.

Please feel free to share the WLR 2016 Fall flyer with your homeschooling friends—or those who are considering home education! You may print and post the flyer or forward it online.

For your friends who enjoy social media, photos of our classes in action can be found on the WLR Facebook page.

Thank you for spreading the word about our unique classes and programs! Your assistance is appreciated not only by WLR staff and teachers, but also by our currently registered families.

Join Rick Tan for this outside-of-the-box keynote presentation at WLR’s upcoming Wholistic Learning at Home Parent Mini-Conference.

Rick will lead participants through a hands-on activity to develop a practical understanding of five key areas that impact homeschool life. Using the senses and imagination, gain insight and inspiration into your path as a home educator, while learning to balance personal health, homeschooling goals and family life. wlr presents

Welcome Ms. Audra Sterrett!

WLR is pleased to welcome Audra Sterrett to our program!

Audra holds a Bachelor’s degree in Literature and has been credentialed to teach Audra-picin California public schools. In addition, Audra has been homeschooling her own children for seven years.

Learning Spanish in high school piqued Audra’s interest in different languages. She subsequently studied French, Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL) while earning her degree at U.C. Santa Barbara. When Audra learned that her sister was teaching her nephew to sign before he could speak, she realized that ASL would be helpful with young children. As a public school kindergarten teacher, Audra used sign language and other movement as a way to engage her students. ASL helped them actively engage in the learning process and improved their memory. Audra also used ASL to communicate with her own children before they could speak.

Audra has taught ASL classes to parents and toddlers through Mother’s Support Network, “1st 5 Sacramento,” and to children of all ages through the University of California’s 4-H Youth Development program.

Audra will be teaching ASL at WLR on Thursdays this Fall. Check the Class Descriptions page and the Thursday Class Schedule for more information.

Charlotte Mason Class Coming Soon!

Since the inception of WLR, I have been looking to add Charlotte Mason-inspired programs. So I was thrilled when teacher Lorna Burkhard contacted me to propose a new class: Nature Notebooks.

Lorna is a credentialed teacher who homeschooled her own children all the way through high school. She is enthusiastic in her approach and understands the needs of homeschoolers from direct experience.

Lorna’s nature journaling class offers many benefits including coverage of core curriculum areas such as Nature notebook picscience, art, math, language arts, and social studies; growth in appreciation and observance of nature; and curiosity and independence in personal study. Students will discover new facts and skills in their study of nature.  The class offers a platform for children to communicate their experiences and prioritizes a time for drawing and notating details. Students will concentrate on a variety of topics ranging from detailed studies of flowers, insects, sea animals, birds, weather, or topics of their choice.

Nature Notebooks is scheduled for Mondays, beginning September 8 at 11 a.m. for Grades 4-8 and at 12:30 p.m. for Grades 1-3. The Fall Session runs for 10 weeks. Register here.

Join me in welcoming Ms. Burkhard to WLR!
